See Your True Investment Return
Most investors only look at price change when checking how an investment performed — but that misses half the picture. Dividends, interest, and other income earned along the way count too. Our Holding Period Return Calculator combines price change and income into one accurate percentage, showing exactly how well your investment performed over the time you held it.
What Is Holding Period Return?
Holding Period Return (HPR) is the total return earned on an investment over the entire time you held it, expressed as a percentage. Unlike a simple price comparison, HPR accounts for any income received — dividends, interest, or distributions — alongside price change, making it a more complete performance measure than capital gains alone.
The Formula
HPR = (Sell Price + Income − Buy Price) ÷ Buy Price × 100
Example: Buy at $1,000, sell at $1,150, earn $50 in dividends → HPR = 20%
How It Works
- Enter the Buy Price — what you originally paid.
- Enter the Sell Price — the price you sold at, or its current value.
- Add Dividends / Income (optional) — any income earned during the period.
- Click Calculate to see your Holding Period Return instantly.
Why Holding Period Return Matters
HPR captures total performance, not just price gain — two investments with identical price growth can have very different real returns if one pays dividends. It isn’t annualized; it simply measures total return over whatever period you held the investment, whether a month or several years. That makes it a fair way to compare a dividend-paying stock against a non-dividend asset like most cryptocurrencies.
Who Uses This Calculator
Dividend investors who want income factored into returns, stock and crypto investors comparing total performance, and students or analysts applying core return formulas.
